August is National Parks Month in Costa Rica. These areas, designated to protect the country’s flora and fauna, scenic beauty, cultural heritage and other treasures, have given Costa Rica great reputation worldwide.
The main goal of Guanacaste’s Las Baulas Marine National Park is to preserve leatherback turtles. Once baby turtles hatch, they quickly run to the sea to avoid the many predators they are exposed to on the beach. Photo courtesy of INCAFO.
Music and literary creations from Guanacaste have received an important boost thanks to the publication of a collection of books and compact discs by the label “De Guanacaste,” which was created by the University of Costa Rica and the Growing Together program of tourism and real estate developer Peninsula Papagayo’s Community Relations Office.
The book by Hernan Gutierrez, The River Told Me, is the product of a compilation of stories by 12 elderly people from the communities of Guardia and Comunidad
As it is tradition, in the month of July, when Guanacaste celebrates the anniversary of its annexation to Costa Rica, government officials take advantage to unveil several infrastructure projects in the province.
The province of Guanacaste will benefit from the injection of 114.7 billion colones (some $225 million) between 2009 and 2010, as outlined in an Action Plan unveiled last July 25 during the President’s Cabinet meeting in Nicoya.
The funds earmarked as part of this initiative will go to three key areas: integrated water resources management, solid waste management and regulatory plans; production, infrastructure and energy; and access to public services, education, health, housing and security. On the occasion of the 184th anniversary of the Annexation of the Partido de Nicoya (today Guanacaste) to Costa Rica, which was celebrated last July 25, a series of proposals were made to guarantee the province will have enough water to supply its needs.
